Mine event in Niger on Thu 14th May 2026
14th May 2026
Niger 🇳🇪 | More than 60 dead in a terrorist attack in Garbougna, Tillabéri. On May 14, Katiba Hanifa (JNIM) terrorists claimed responsibility for seizing a Nigerien army barracks following an assault on a military engineering unit in Garbougna.
🔸 The targeted unit was involved in the construction of a bridge in this area near the Malian border.
🔴 67 soldiers and civilians were reportedly killed, according to local sources. Several people are still missing.
🔵 The military camp was reportedly completely looted and destroyed (📷 loot in thumbnails).
🔹 The Nigerien Armed Forces' (FAN) response was delayed by mines laid on the roads leading to the town of Garbougna. A search operation is underway.
⚠ The Dori (Burkina Faso) - Téra - Gothèye road, until a year ago, marked the boundary between the influence of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) (to the north) and the JNIM (to the south).
However, since then, the JNIM had been pushed further south by the ISGS, towards their base near Torodi. This attack demonstrates the JNIM terrorists' desire to resume their strategy of expansion and attacks on the Malian Armed Forces (FAN) bases.
The ISGS, for its part, is concentrated in the north and the Malian towns of Labbezanga and Ménaka, recently recaptured by the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and the Russian paramilitaries of the Africa Corps.
