Police are investigating the murder of a 75-year-old woman in Ngcobo, Eastern Cape, after a group allegedly attacked and killed her over witchcraft accusations.

Police say a group of relatives took 75-year-old Nokhansala Sidiki from her home in Zadungeni A/A, Luthuthu locality, Ngcobo, on the morning of 17 May 2026. They allegedly accused her of witchcraft, dragged her to a nearby stream, assaulted her with a plank, and drowned her.

Police found Sidiki’s naked body next to the stream. She had bruises on her head and face, along with marks on her neck consistent with strangulation.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that the suspects fled the scene. Detectives have opened a murder case and are collecting witness statements and forensic evidence.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata condemned the killing. He described it as a “savage and deeply disturbing attack”.

Ncata said communities must stop taking the law into their own hands and reject witchcraft accusations as a basis for violence. He urged anyone with information to come forward and assist police.

Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta also condemned the attack, warning that similar killings are increasing in the Alfred Nzo region.

Fanta said four women have died in May alone and urged communities to protect vulnerable people and reject harmful witchcraft beliefs.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or report anonymously through the MySAPS app. Police will treat all information confidentially.
