Tohoku Electric Power has decided to halt operations at the No. 2 reactor of the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, after detecting trace amounts of steam containing radioactive material. With a strong earthquake striking shortly afterward, anxiety is mounting in Japan over a possible repeat of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. According to NHK and Kyodo News on Sunday (local time), Tohoku Electric confirmed that a small amount of steam was detected inside the turbine building of the Onagawa No. 2 reactor at around 5:10 p.m. the previous day. The steam was reportedly captured around equipment that processes vapor generated after turning the power-generating turbine.
