13th May 2026
On May 13, Amritsar Police neutralised an illegal arms smuggling module and arrested five persons, including a juvenile, involved in the supply and distribution of sophisticated foreign-made weapons allegedly smuggled from Pakistan via drones, reports The Tribune. Six pistols (Austria-made Glock 9mm, Italy-made Beretta .32, US-made .30 bore, Croatia-made Glock 9mm and others) and 14 live cartridges were recovered in intelligence-based operations. A case under Sections 25(8), 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered at the Cantonment police station on May 1. Akashdeep Singh, alias Akash, previously booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for two kilograms of heroin at Lopoke police station and released on March 23, 2026, was allegedly in contact with Pakistan-based smugglers Akash and Rehan via social media. Arms consignments were dropped by drones in the Attari sector. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said Akash lured unemployed youths into the network. Three youths, aged 19, had no prior criminal record. The juveniles father is in jail in a 2020 heroin case. Further investigations are underway to trace linkages.
