On May 11, unidentified assailants allegedly hurled a “bomb-like object” at the residence of village sarpanch (head of village-level local self-Government institution) Nishan Singh in Sudhar village in Ramdass area of Amritsar District of Punjab, reports The Tribune. The incident followed alleged extortion threats. Singh stated that he received a call from a person who identified himself as gangster Jeevan Fauji, demanding INR 5 million. A second call after the incident warned of consequences if the demand was unmet. Singh and his family escaped unhurt. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sohail Qasim Mir stated that there was no explosion, describing it as “like a fire,” and added that forensic samples were collected. Investigations are ongoing.
