A 27-year-old Punjab-origin man, Jaskaran Saroye, was arrested in Surrey, Canada, in connection with an extortion-linked shooting incident, reports The Tribune on May 8. The arrest followed a shooting on April 13 near 94A Avenue and 127 Street, where gunshots were fired into an occupied residence. No injuries were reported. Surrey Police Service (SPS) charged Saroye with discharging a firearm into a place knowing a person was present. Chief Constable Norm Lipinski termed the incident a serious threat to public safety. Police indicated links to ongoing extortion-related violence targeting the South Asian community.
