Armed Standoff in Bucyrus Ends in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting; Ashland County Bomb Squad Called to Scene 

BUCYRUS, Ohio — An armed domestic dispute in Bucyrus ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting Monday morning after an hours-long standoff involving a barricaded suspect who police said was wearing body armor, carrying a firearm and later threatened law enforcement with explosives.

According to the Bucyrus Police Department, officers were called to a domestic dispute at approximately 10:21 p.m. Sunday in the 900 block of East Warren Street. When officers arrived, they observed a man inside the residence wearing body armor and carrying a firearm.

The suspect was identified as Paul A. Desmarais, 41, of Bucyrus.

Bucyrus Police Chief Jon A. Dorsey said Desmarais barricaded himself inside the home as Bucyrus officers, along with local and state law enforcement partners, attempted to negotiate with him for several hours. The standoff continued into Monday morning.

According to the police department, officers made several attempts to use less-lethal tactics before the situation escalated. Desmarais allegedly threatened that he had explosive devices and fired multiple shots at officers. That led to an officer-involved shooting, police said.

No officers were injured.

Chief Dorsey said during a press conference Monday afternoon that Desmarais was alone inside the home during the incident. He also confirmed that other people were believed to have been inside the residence when officers initially responded to the domestic dispute, but they were not inside during the standoff.

After the shooting, officers cleared the residence and located explosive materials. The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called to the scene due to concerns about possible explosives inside the home.

Dorsey said explosive materials were contained and removed from the residence, with some items expected to be detonated at another location. He said investigators remained cautious because additional ingredients or materials were still inside the home.

“There is no threat to public safety,” the Bucyrus Police Department said in its media release.

During the press conference, Dorsey said officers attempted to use gas or similar less-lethal methods to get Desmarais to surrender, but officials believed he had a gas mask on.

“He had no intention in coming out is what it appears,” Dorsey said.

Authorities did not confirm whether a hand grenade was found, though Dorsey said police did locate explosives and that the caution used by officers was warranted. He declined to discuss the exact type of explosive materials due to the ongoing investigation.

Dorsey said the officer involved in the shooting was not from a local Crawford County agency, but he did not identify the officer or agency involved.

The Bucyrus Police Department was assisted by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Mansfield Police Department, Lexington Police Department, Ontario Police Department, Crawford County Coroner’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and Bucyrus Fire Department.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to investigate the officer-involved shooting and remained on scene Monday. Officials said the completed investigation will likely be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office and presented to a grand jury, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Dorsey said the incident was difficult for his department and the surrounding law enforcement community.

“Nobody wants it to end this way,” Dorsey said, adding that multiple agencies responded quickly and worked together during the lengthy standoff.

Officials also addressed rumors circulating in the community, including a claim that Desmarais may have fallen from a roof or window. Dorsey said that claim was not true.

The domestic dispute remains under investigation by the Bucyrus Police Department. The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by BCI.
