Three police officers died after a shooting at a house in Kariega in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police said officers responded to reports of gunfire at a property in Rudman Street at about 1am.

South African Police Service spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said responding officers found three constables with multiple gunshot wounds.

Paramedics declared two officers dead at the scene, while a third officer died shortly after arriving at Cuyler Hospital.

Early investigations indicate that a male constable, believed to be the former boyfriend of a female constable, allegedly forced his way into the house where the woman and another male constable were inside.

Witnesses reportedly heard gunshots moments later.

Police confiscated a state-issued firearm and 10 live rounds at the scene. Investigators will use ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police have not yet released the names of the deceased officers as authorities are still informing their families.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate will conduct a parallel investigation in line with the IPID Act.

SAPS has also opened an internal disciplinary investigation.

Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata described the incident as a tragic loss for the police service.

"Three young officers have lost their lives under heartbreaking circumstances," Ncata said.

He added that SAPS is providing trauma counselling and support to affected members and the families of the deceased officers.

Police have not announced any arrests and investigations continue.
