A young man has died after being injured by a sharp object in central Kristianstad on Saturday evening.

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The man, who is in his 20s, was injured by a sharp object during a fight on Östra Storgatan.

He was reportedly taken to the emergency room by relatives, according to police. The emergency room then went into "lockdown."

– We call it an evacuation. It is still open to patients, but there are police and security guards on site in the emergency room, says Tomas Nilsson at Region Skåne's press service.

– It got very chaotic there and we had to go to the emergency room to try to sort things out and calm the atmosphere there, together with the security guards, says Leif Fransson, press spokesperson for the police.

“A lot of screaming”

Rebecka Johansson lives on Östra Storgatan, near where the fight is said to have taken place.

– I heard a very terrible life outside here. There was a lot of screaming. There was some fighting. It has been cordoned off since then. There is a lot of blood all over the street, she says.

At 8 p.m., the police announced on their website that the man had died and that the police were now investigating the incident as a homicide. Next of kin have been notified.

Police: Entering a new phase

– Now we are entering a new phase because we have a suspected murder to deal with. We will of course collect as many witnesses as we can down on Östra Storgatan but also down at the emergency room, says police spokesperson Leif Fransson at around 8 p.m.

At 10 p.m., there was still a lot of activity around both the hospital and the suspected murder scene.

– Yes, technical investigations will be carried out and witnesses will be interviewed. Cars may also have to be towed to secure evidence. But it will be some time before we have an overview of the case.

On Sunday morning, police announced that three men in their 25s were arrested overnight. They are now being held on suspicion of murder.
