The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called in after a cache of grenades and other explosives, roughly 100 years old, was found in Thousand Oaks over the weekend.

“A family was organizing the belongings of their late grandfather who served in WWII and came across a cache of authentic Japanese, British, and American grenades along with other ordnance dating back nearly a century,” the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad said.

Explosive ordnance disposal technicians with the U.S. Navy seized the explosives. Although the explosives may be considered historically significant, they were marked for destruction due to safety concerns.

“Although an attempt was made, some of these items still contained possible explosive hazards,” the sheriff’s office said.

When possible explosives are found, the sheriff’s office advises members of the public to leave them in place, evacuate and call 911.

“A simple untrained look is often not enough to distinguish inert military memorabilia from live munitions,” the sheriff’s office said. “It’s always better to be safe than sorry.”
