An attack against members of the National Guard in the community of Santa Martha, in Ocuilán, State of Mexico, resulted in the seizure of two vehicles and a large deployment of federal and state forces in the area. The incident occurred when federal personnel were conducting surveillance and inspection operations related to the suspected trafficking of illegally logged timber. When they signaled a pickup truck carrying logs to stop, the driver attempted to flee, and other vehicles blocked their path, triggering an armed attack against the agents. According to state authorities, no injuries or deaths have been confirmed, despite reports circulating in the area. The Secretary of Public Security for the State of Mexico rejected these reports and assured that the presence of the National Guard, Army, and state police remains in the area to ensure control of the territory. The municipality of Ocuilán has been repeatedly identified as a hotspot for illegal logging, an activity that has led to clashes between local groups and security forces. This time, residents also blocked access roads to their communities to demand a halt to illegal logging. The operation is ongoing while authorities maintain patrols and controls on rural roads in a region where environmental pressures and disputes over forest resources have led to security incidents on several occasions.
