Five dead after an armed clash between residents and armed civilians in Venustiano Carranza, Chiapas. The conflict erupted while members of the Casa del Pueblo organization were maintaining a blockade due to land disputes and ended up confronting a group described as “narco-paramilitary.” Residents report that everything spiraled out of control when armed men, identified as part of the self-proclaimed ASBAL, attempted to enter communal lands. In audio recordings that have been circulating, residents called for weapons and reinforcements to repel the attack as they followed the vehicles through the Chamburro area. Our team was able to confirm the presence of shell casings scattered on the rural road and pickup trucks used as makeshift barricades. The region has been plagued by years of land disputes, where local groups organize and respond independently to outside incursions. The Chiapas State Attorney General's Office confirmed the confrontation and deployed some 200 personnel alongside the Mexican Army and the National Guard. The official tally acknowledges two deaths, Mari Cruz Moreno Gordillo and Luis Alfonso López Sánchez, in addition to seven injured, while investigations remain open to clarify who triggered the violence.
