A large police response was sent and customers and employees were evacuated after a person claimed to have brought a bomb into the Costco store in Lake in the Hills Monday afternoon.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department responded around 3:30 p.m. Monday to the Costco Wholesale, 250 North Randall Road in Lake in the Hills, for a report of a bomb threat.

Lake in the Hills Police Department Public Information Officer Blaine Krage said a person claimed to be bringing a pipe bomb into the store.

Staff and employees were immediately evacuated and officers secured the area, Krage said.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District responded to the scene and staged as a precaution.

The police department issued a NIXLE alert warning people to avoid the area during the incident.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded with its bomb squad unit and an explosives detection canine unit.

The Metra Police Department also sent an explosives detection canine unit to assist.

Krage said a thorough search of the property was conducted. “At this time, no injuries have been reported. The investigation continues.”

The bomb threat investigation concluded around 6 p.m. Monday, Krage said.

There is no threat to the public or the store following the investigation.

Police have not released any further details on the incident or said whether the suspect has been identified.
