An armed group stormed the home of Efraín Blanco Villagómez, the ejido commissioner of Matatenatito and former Morena party candidate for mayor of Omealca, Veracruz, and shot him dead inside his house. According to reports, heavily armed men arrived on motorcycles, forced their way inside, and shot him before fleeing in an unknown direction. The area was secured by state and federal law enforcement agencies after the attack. Elements of the Veracruz State Public Security Secretariat, the National Guard, and the Mexican Navy launched an operation in the sugarcane-growing region of Omealca to try to locate those responsible, while the State Attorney General's Office opened an investigation. This case adds to a series of recent violent incidents in the area, where days earlier another former mayoral candidate was shot under similar circumstances, raising concerns in rural communities of the region. The Matatenatito area, with strong ejido and agricultural activity, has been the scene of constant tension between local actors and dynamics of violence that affect community leaders and political figures.
