Five people were executed and then burned inside the bed of a stolen pickup truck in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, in a targeted attack that also sparked a confrontation with state forces. The attack occurred at night in San Miguel Charahuén, on the highway to Uruapan, where the victims were riddled with bullets and their bodies set ablaze inside a Mitsubishi L200 with license plates from the State of Mexico and a reported theft. Two Toyota pickup trucks, a Tacoma and a Hilux, were also found abandoned and riddled with bullets at the scene, indicating a previous clash between rival groups, according to our findings in the area. When Regional Commissioner Abundio Alfaro Méndez was en route to the location after receiving 911 calls, his convoy was ambushed, triggering a shootout that lasted several minutes. Despite the intensity of the attack, no officers were injured, and the assailants escaped through dirt roads connecting wooded areas with avocado orchards. The Pátzcuaro region has long been marked by the dispute between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and “Pueblos Unidos,” the latter linked to the Knights Templar. The Attorney General's Office is already investigating whether the victims were involved in a previous confrontation, which reinforces the pattern of executions stemming from clashes between rival cells in this key area of western Mexico.
