CBRN event in Bulgaria on Wed 29th April 2026
29th April 2026
Radiation contamination levels of up to 70 times higher than normal have been found at neighborhood in the Bulgarian capital, prompting an urgent investigation. Officials said on Wednesday they had been alerted to the suspected contamination at the site of a former radioactive waste storage facility in the Malinova Dolina district of Sofia, a few kilometers south of the city center. Energy Minister Traicho Traikov ordered and attended an on-site inspection, with teams using specialized equipment to measure radiation levels. Traikov said: “In some points, values between 10 and 70 times above the natural background [radiation] were recorded.” He said that the contamination does not pose a risk to people or the environment as long as members of the public do not cross the fenced off areas where the radiation levels were detected.
