RPG event in Oman on Wed 22nd April 2026
22nd April 2026
On 22 April 2026, around 7:30am Muscat time, one Iranian IRGC navy gunboat containing 3 crew members carried out a gunfire and RPG attack against the Epaminondas container ship (IMO: 9153862) in the Strait of Hormuz, around 15 nm northeast of Oman, as it was attempting to leave the Persian Gulf. The attack caused heavy damage to the bridge of the ship made up of 21 Ukrainian and Filipino crew members. There were no casualties. The IRGC then seized the ship, directing it towards Bandar Abbas in Iran, claiming it did not have authorization to pass through the strait and was operating with its AIS systems off, 'causing a risk to navigational safety'. The Greek company owning the ship later confirmed the seizure. This took place amid the US/Israel-Iran conflict and a naval standoff and reciprocal blockade between the US and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
