Tokyo electric power company announced 23 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 reactor internal survey results, said the reactor measured in the internal“Extremely high” level of nuclear radiation. It was the first time since the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident that TEPCO had measured radiation inside a reactor with a melted core. According to NHK, the investigation was carried out on the 16th by sending a fiber-optic endoscope equipped with a measuring instrument through a pipe into the reactor, about 5 meters from the bottom of the reactor, radiation was measured at about 4.7 sieverts per hour, an“Extremely high” level. TEPCO said the investigation showed that a certain amount of nuclear residue remained inside the no. 2 reactor, the company will further analyze the data and study the method of removing the nuclear residue. Affected by the“March 11” East Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, the reactor cores of Units 1 to 3 of all six units at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant melted down, forming about 880 tons of nuclear residue. The removal of radioactive waste from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is considered one of the biggest challenges in decommissioning operations.
