🇲🇽 | Members of the Veracruz State Police riddled Dr. Bertha Burciaga Mora with bullets this Monday, April 20, at the Tihuatlán tollbooth. The 38-year-old anesthesiologist, who worked at the General Hospital Zone 24 of the Mexican Social Security Institute in Poza Rica, was traveling in a white Tiguan SUV with her companion, Cristina R., when the officers opened fire directly on the vehicle. The agents were allegedly pursuing criminals fleeing in a Ford Escape after a robbery, but ended up firing on the civilians after mistaking the vehicles for theirs. We were able to confirm that the doctor's vehicle had multiple bullet impacts concentrated on the driver's side, which resulted in her instant death. Witnesses present stated that the police fired without warning or following identification protocols, attacking the white SUV as soon as it reached the toll plaza. The victim's body remained behind the wheel of the vehicle with license plate YEX-207-B, while the actual criminals managed to escape the area despite the official deployment. Tihuatlán and the area along the Mexico-Tuxpan highway have been a constant scene of violent robberies and the presence of criminal groups vying for control of fuel theft and cargo transport. However, the actions of the State Police, under the command of the Public Security Secretariat, are once again under scrutiny due to a lack of training and the disproportionate use of force. While the medical community of Poza Rica demands justice, the official version attempts to establish a narrative of crossfire to deflect responsibility from the officers who shot an innocent woman.
