Russian emergency crews are cleaning up an oil spill in the Black Sea that resulted from a drone attack on the port of Tuapse, local authorities said Monday.
The drone attack which happened Thursday night led to fire on the technological equipment at the marine terminal, damaging the infrastructure there. As a result, an oil slick was recorded one and a half miles from the port, with the contaminated area covering roughly 10,000 square meters, the regional headquarters of emergency task force said in a statement.
To contain the spill, boom barriers have been deployed, while six port vessels, including high-speed boats and oil skimmers, are actively collecting the oil.
Cleanup efforts are also underway in the Tuapse River, where oil entered the waterway. The spill in the river has been localized using 750 meters of boom barriers and five specialized collection devices, along with an oil trap, said the statement.
A new wave of drone attacks hit Tuapse on Monday, causing fire at the port. Debris from the drones damaged windows in several city buildings and severed a gas pipeline. At least one person was killed during the attack, according to the statement.
