UAV event in Iraq on Wed 8th April 2026

On 8 April 2026, drones launched by an unidentified armed group (likely linked to Iranian-backed groups due to ongoing hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran) targeted the area around Baghdad International Airport (Baghdad), at the time when a large security convoy carrying US diplomats, FBI personnel, and freed American journalist Shelly Kittelson left Baghdad's Green Zone for the airport. The drone attack forced the convoy to abort the plan and return her to the US embassy. Later that afternoon she was evacuated by helicopter from the embassy, in an air operation secured by intensive Iraqi and US coordination. The US accused pro-Iranian factions of staging an ambush and demanded that the Iraqi government dismantle those groups. Casualties unknown.
