The military, which has been conducting airstrikes during the Burmese New Year, Thingyan, also carried out airstrikes in southern Pauk Township, Magway Region today (the day before Thingyan), killing two people on the spot and injuring five others.
Two high-explosive bombs were dropped on Wanlei village, about four miles south of Pauk Township, at around 2:30 p.m. today (April 16). They landed in the middle of the village and exploded, killing a 50-year-old man and a woman instantly.
In addition, five people, including a 16-year-old girl, were injured, and four were seriously injured, said an official from the Humanitarian Assistance Department under the National Unity Government in Pauk Township.
“There was no fighting there. Pyu Village was not nearby. There were no defense forces. The village was small... There was no water play pavilion. There was no dancing and fun, so they just came and threw it away for no reason,” the official said.
He added that seven buildings were damaged in the airstrike, leaving local residents worried.
The humanitarian official said that people in rural areas are having to endure air traffic warnings during the Thingyan New Year period.
The coup leader has been carrying out airstrikes across the country, even during the Thingyan festival, since changing into civilian clothes after the military-led sham election.
On the eve of Thingyan, the Taik Thit Monastery in Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, where revolutionary forces were strong, was bombed from the air, killing two monks and a monk who were performing the Thingyan ritual.
In Sagaing Region, the towns near Namkha, such as Aryataw, Shwebo, and Depayin, were hit by airstrikes and artillery fire yesterday, while villages on the border of Yinmapin and Pale are being set on fire by both sides.
As military airstrikes have intensified, more than 480 people have been killed and nearly 420 injured in airstrikes in the month of March alone, according to data released by the Government of National Unity and the Ministry of Human Rights.
