Military closes pavilion after bomb blast near Meiktila central pavilion, no injuries reported

Yangon, April 16

The military has closed the central Thingyan pavilion in Meiktila, Mandalay Region, after a bomb exploded at a power supply near the central Thingyan pavilion at around 12 noon on April 16.

The explosion occurred in the electricity supply system next to the pavilion, despite heavy security by the military and police.

After the explosion, the military council members immediately stopped the central Thingyan pavilion and permanently closed it, citing security reasons.

"A bomb exploded in the power line next to the pavilion. Now the central pavilion is also closed. All the roads are closed and no one can enter," a source in the Meiktila region confirmed.

A resident of the Meiktila region said that the central pavilion where the bomb exploded was the Thingyan Water Festival pavilion of the General Administration Department, which was specially cordoned off by the military, police, and Pyu Saw Htee. It was not easy for people from outside to enter and exit, and it was possible that they would detonate bombs among themselves.

"There are a lot of soldiers, police and militia deployed near the central pavilion. I think they are just trying to divide themselves and blame others. Because it is a general pavilion. It is not easy for anyone to get close," explained a resident of the Meiktila region.
