Russian authorities have stated that the explosion at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim plant was caused by an accident. This was reported by Russian official sources. According to preliminary data, the cause was the ignition of a gas mixture during the production of synthetic rubber, specifically due to equipment failure—an air dryer exploded. As a result of the incident, 72 people were injured, 8 of whom were hospitalized, and another 64 sustained minor injuries. Two rescue workers were also injured. The fire covered an area of over 2,000 square meters and was classified as a maximum-level emergency. The plant’s employees were evacuated. Following the explosion, all public events in the city were canceled. Local residents report a chemical odor in the air and throat irritation. At the same time, authorities assure that there is no threat to the population.
