Locals say that the victims were injured when a gunpowder storage facility exploded in Yaw Pan village, Panghsang Township, which is controlled by the United Wa State Army (UWSA).

The explosion occurred at 4pm yesterday (April 7), damaging the building and many people living nearby, according to local residents.

“Yes, there was an explosion. I only know that it was an explosion at a gunpowder factory. Many people were injured. It happened in the village, so we don’t know exactly,” said a resident of Panghsang.

An investigation into the incident is underway, according to sources close to the Wa Army.

“Investigations are underway. The center will release more details,” said a source close to top Wa leaders.

Local news outlet Wa New Land released footage of the aftermath of the explosion, showing a collapsed building, smoke still billowing, and UWSA officials inspecting the damage.

Locals say that in addition to local entrepreneurs, Chinese nationals often come to work in the mines near Panghsang, which are controlled by the UWSA.

On March 3, 2019, a building storing commercial gas cylinders in Mong Maung Township, controlled by the Wa Army, exploded, killing 16 locals, including factory workers, and injuring 48 others.

Similarly, in May 2022, an explosion occurred at a gunpowder storage facility in the Mekman Sai mine in Waingaung district, controlled by the UWSA 'Wa' force, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 20.
