A monk and a woman were killed when two fighter jets fired at least six shots and dropped bombs on a refugee camp in Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, today (April 6), according to rescue workers.

Two fighter jets bombed and machine-gunned an IDP camp near Sin Inn village, about 23 miles northwest of Shwebo town, at around 11 a.m. this morning.

A bomb exploded near a self-help school in a refugee camp, killing one monk and a woman with a severed leg.

In addition to the two dead, three others were injured and a child is missing, according to a local man and camp officials who helped search and rescue efforts.

“A school for children in a refugee camp was hit. A monk was hit in the chest and died on the spot. An elderly woman lost her leg. A child is still missing, and it is not known if someone took him or how,” said a local man who helped search and rescue.

This is a camp where people who fled fear of the military after the army regained control of Thabeikkyin Township on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River are taking refuge.

“The school is next to the IDP camp. It is open to IDPs. Now they are attacking that school. They are also firing towards the IDP camp. So far, two people have been killed and three injured,” a man in charge of the IDP camp said this afternoon.

Three days ago, a house rented by displaced people from the Thabeik Kyin War in Sin Inn village was bombed, injuring seven people, according to the village's defense chief.

Tens of thousands of civilians from Mathay, Sint Ku, and Thabeik Kyin townships in Mandalay Region on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River have been displaced in several townships in Sagaing Region since the military recaptured these townships.

The coup d'état military has been carrying out aerial bombings targeting displaced people in Mandalay Region since last year, resulting in casualties among the displaced people.

In March, amid a global fuel crisis, the military launched airstrikes in Rakhine, Bago, Magway, Sagaing, and Kachin states, killing at least 300 people

. Since early March this year, the military has been changing the format of its airstrikes, using as many as two to five aircraft to strike targets in some areas.

The Arakan Army (AA) earlier this month urged the public to be especially aware of aviation hazards, as the airstrikes in Rakhine State have involved multiple aircraft being used at the same time.

According to the National Unity Government (NUG) Ministry of Human Rights’ records from February 2021 to January this year, 2,293 airstrikes were carried out nationwide, indiscriminately targeting civilian infrastructure, with Sagaing Division suffering the worst damage, it was announced on March 31.
