A responsible official from the Kawthung Township People's Defence Force told Mizzima that the patrol boat of the military junta's navy, which was on patrol at sea within the Kawthung Township area of Tanintharyi Region, was fired upon.

The patrol boat, which had been patrolling from the direction of Khaungtaung towards the mouth of the Khamokngyaung stream, was targeted by the Maukgi township's Malawmyo stream They said the ambush took place at around 2 p.m. on 7 April at a location known locally as Tookpyu.

The boat was said to be carrying around 20 soldiers from the Kyaukpyu battalion, along with heavy weapons and rifles from the Kyaukpyu Township People's Defence Force. The military commission vessel turned back after about 10 minutes of exchange fire from small arms, it is said.

The military commission troops attacked were said to be the unit that frequently arrests civilians being repatriated from Thailand to Myanmar via the Thai-Myanmar border's Kaew-Soi-Ranong route to conscript them.

The spokesperson for Kaewthong District said, ‘As for enemy casualties, there were certainly quite a lot. In the end, they couldn't return fire and fled.’ We have not yet received any reports of casualties," he told Mizzima. The Kyaukpyu Township People's Defence Force has issued a statement, urging local residents to remain vigilant and aware of the military situation, as the potential for increased military activity exists in the Kyaukpyu area.
