DHQ confirms attack on military base in Borno, troops repel insurgents By: Zagazola Makama The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno. The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. Onoja said the attack, which targeted the Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade, occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday when insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the formation. He said the troops, under the leadership of the Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Oseni Braimah, responded with superior firepower and tactical coordination, forcing the attackers to retreat. “Troops of Operation Hadin Kai came under a coordinated terrorist attack at their location in Benisheikh, Borno State. “The insurgents attempted to infiltrate the Brigade Headquarters but were decisively engaged by our gallant troops and forced to withdraw in disarray,” he said. According to him, the failed attack reflects the desperation of terrorist elements following sustained military offensives against them in the North-East theatre. Onoja said the swift response by the troops underscored their high level of combat readiness, resilience and operational effectiveness in defending critical military infrastructure. He, however, said that the encounter resulted in the loss of some soldiers, who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. Zagazola report that Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Oseni Braimah, was among the soldiers who paid the ultimate price. “The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, honours their heroism, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation. “Their courage remains a source of pride and inspiration to the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” he said. Onoja added that the military high command had extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. He said details of the casualties would be communicated after formal notification of their next of kin, in line with military tradition. The DHQ spokesman urged the public and media to disregard misinformation and unverified reports circulating on social media, noting that such content could undermine ongoing military operations. He added that troops had commenced clearance and exploitation operations in the general area to track and neutralise fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping. “The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in collaboration with other security agencies, remain resolute and undeterred in the fight against terrorism. “We urge citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while continuing to support security agencies with credible information,” he said. Onoja reaffirmed the commitment of the military to restoring lasting peace and stability in the North-East and across the country.
