IED event in Guatemala on Tue 31st March 2026

For the second day, investigators and bomb disposal specialists operated in La Democracia, Huehuetenango, securing an arsenal that included grenades, rifles, and improvised explosive devices in the village of Las Espuelas. Among the materials found were: 3 AK rifles, 1 shotgun, and various types of grenades, Commercial explosives and improvised explosive devices , 80 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, portable radios, and tactical equipment. The Guatemalan Army participated in reconnaissance of the area. Authorities are investigating the origin of the weapons and their connection to groups operating in the border region. We spoke with residents of the area, who expressed relief at the seizure and requested that the operations continue to ensure the safety of their families. The investigation remains active in western Guatemala.
