On 22 March 2026, in La Merced de Buenos Aires (San Miguel de Urcuqui, Imbabura), the army destroyed mine entrances and camps used by armed groups for illegal mining across 212 hectares in the sectors known as El Verde, La Visera, and El Cristal. For this operation, the army used BM-21 artillery systems and mortars. These operations aim to regain territorial control in the area. There were no fatalities.
