On 18 March 2026, a projectile launched an unidentified armed group (likely linked to Iranian-backed groups due to ongoing hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran) struck Kirkuk Air Base at Kirkuk International Airport (coded as Kirkuk city, Kirkuk). It fell inside the air-defense operations hall in the military section of the airport, causing fire and material damage and prompting a large security deployment around the facility. Police stated there had been no attack on the airport . An investigation was launched to determine whether the fallen object was a drone or a rocket. There were no casualties.
