On 11 March 2026, two ISIL members riding a motorcycle shelled the home of a former oil refinery investor in the town of Thiban, in the eastern countryside of Deir ez Zor, with an RPG after accusing him of refusing to pay zakat. The homeowner responded, leading to a clash between both sides using machine guns. The exchange caused material damage to the house. There were no casualties.
