Around 7 March 2026 (as reported), in Kawkareik township (Kawkareik district, Kayin state), fighting broke out between the combined forces of the Myanmar military, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, and the Border Guard Force and the joint forces of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNU/KNLA) and the allied forces as the Myanmar military combined forces advanced in three separate columns, targeting villages along the northern Kawkareik-Dawna mountain road, the Kyondoe-Kawkareik road section, and the villages of An Pha Lay and An Pha Gyi in southern Kawkareik town, to reopen the Kawkareik-Myawaddy Asian Highway. The Myanmar military combined forces used drone strikes and heavy weapons and the joint allied forces made temporary withdrawals from some outposts located near the highway. The drone attacks injured five KNLA soldiers.
