On 7 March 2026, ENDF conducted a heavy artillery (mortar) shelling from its base at Guha Meda near Ajbar, hitting the compound of Nigist Atironos Mariyam monastery in Atironos Mariyam (Mehal Sayint, South Wello, Amhara), killing 6 and wounding 25 civilians. The victims were four Orthodox Christian deaconesses, one former administrator of the monastery, and one nun. The Mehal Sayint Woreda administration confirmed the attack, but claimed that the Fano militia members were located around the area. The shelling damaged the monastery's hall and roof, as well as houses near the monastery.
