A man aged 17-18 has been found shot at a football pitch in Vårby south of Stockholm, police say. The man has been taken to hospital and is very seriously injured.

– It was on a walkway next to the football field that the person was shot, says Per Fahlström, press spokesperson for the Stockholm Police.

According to information provided to SVT, the shooter may be a woman.

It was around 5 p.m. that the police received a call about a person with a gunshot wound in Vårby. The police have opened a preliminary investigation into attempted murder and have a large number of police patrols in the area.

– We have cordoned off the area, are conducting technical investigations and are looking for the perpetrator, says Per Fahlström at the Stockholm Police.

Police say they have identified the man who was shot and are in the process of notifying next of kin. According to police, there were several people in the area when the crime occurred.

– It is clear that people are shocked when a crime like this happens at this time when there are a lot of people out. 

Due to the shooting, trains temporarily passed Vårby Gård station, but around a quarter to five the trains began to stop as usual again and let off passengers, says Karolina Wichman, press spokesperson for SL.

According to information provided to SVT, the shooter may be a woman, but the police are being secretive.

– It's nothing I can comment on, we're going to hold a lot of interrogations during the evening where people will be able to account for what they saw, says Per Fahlström at the Stockholm Police.

Large area cordoned off

A large area around the crime scene was cordoned off during the technical investigation, and the cordons were lifted at 11 p.m., the police said. The police are now working on several measures at the scene, including checking nearby cameras and knocking on doors. Several people have been brought in for questioning, the police wrote on their website.

Police are urging witnesses to contact patrols.

– We have a large number of police patrols on site, so if you have heard or seen anything, contact the police, says Per Fahlström.

Huddinge Municipality offers crisis support

Due to the shooting, Huddinge Municipality has opened the recreation center in Vårby to the public during the evening, and security guards and people from the municipality's crisis group POSOM are in place in the area.

– It's a tight area, so it's clear that people are worried when something like this happens, says Ola Gäverth, press officer at Huddinge municipality.
