On 4 March 2026, night, US submarine USS Charlotte fired 2 MK48 torpedoes at Iranian Navy destroyer IRIS Dena in the Laccadive Sea (Indian Ocean), in the Sri Lankan search and rescue region, around 25 nautical miles south of the city of Galle. The first torpedo missed, while the second led to the sinking of the ship. This resulted in 104 fatalities among the Iranian crew. 32 others were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy. This was the first time a US submarine sunk a ship since WWII.
