On 3 March 2026, a bystander was wounded in an explosion from a grenade thrown by an unidentified assailant at an ongoing construction of a fast-food chain owned by the Lamitan City mayor in Barangay Malakas, Lamitan City (Basilan, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao). The fast-food chain's windows and walls were damaged. Authorities are considering a political motive for the attack since the fast-food chain is owned by the mayor. They are also investigating whether the attack was linked to an extortion scheme, following a known modus operandi.
