On 1 March 2026, armed youth suspected of being members of the 'White Army' (Nuer ethnic militia) from Mayom State, alongside SPLM/A-IO members, clashed with SSPDF forces after the former group attacked Abiemnhom (Abiemnhom County, Unity State). The incident resulted in at least 178 fatalities, including civilians and around 40 government forces, and at least 73 injuries, while an unspecified number went missing. Around 1000 people were displaced to areas including Abyei, parts of Warrap State, nearby villages, surrounding bush areas and the UNMISS base in Abiemnhom Town. SPLM/A-IO denied any involvement in the attack, while Mayom County officials denied involvement of their youth. Awarpiny County Commissioner and the executive director of Abiemnhom County were killed in the attack. Assorted property was destroyed during the clash. Additional security forces were deployed to restore normalcy. 1 source claimed the incident was revenge for the killing of some traders (no further information).
