On 24 February 2026, in Dolores, Peten, at least three armed men on motorcycles shot and killed the former Mayor of Peten, while the victim was driving his car (drive-by). One hypothesis on the attack claims that it was related to the capture of three drug traffickers, brothers of the current mayor of Peten. According to the authorities, the victim had provided crucial information that led to the capture of the three traffickers, hence his killing was a retaliation for collaborating with the police. Another hypothesis claims that the attack was to prevent the former mayor from taking part in the upcoming 2027 elections. 1 fatality.
