RPG event in Cabo Delgado, Quinto Congresso area, Mozambique on Mon 23rd February 2026

On 23 February 2026, for the second day, ISM militants and Mozambique forces, RDF, and Local Forces clashed in Quinto Congresso (Chai, Macomia, Cabo Delgado). The militants used light and medium weapons and RPGs and seized 14 rifles, 4 machine guns, a rocket launcher, an explosives detector, and other equipment. Sources differ on fatalities: one claimed ISM shot 2 Mozambique forces and beheaded 2 civilians on a motorbike, and that all three types of forces sustained injuries. Other sources mentioned that 4 - 5 Local Forces were killed, and 7 RDF were killed. In separate claims, ISM claimed 8 Mozambique forces and 6 RDF were killed, and that it killed 2 'Christian warriors.' An IS photo showed 1 dead Local Force member. Another source claimed at least 4 Local Forces, including a commander, were missing. Fatalities coded as 15 (2 FADM + 2 civilians + 4 Local Forces + 7 RDF).
