On 22 February 2026, 3 people (2 Kenyans and 1 Tanzanian) (coded as unidentified armed group) attacked, drugged, and injured a Tanzanian refugee who also serves as a human rights defender before abandoning him along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway at the Kyumbi (other sources mention Lukenya stage) (Athi River, Machakos), before speeding towards Machakos. The incident is suspected to be linked to a premeditated abduction and forceful rendition of the victim to Tanzania. Security officers intercepted the vehicle and arrested the 3 occupants.
