On 21 February 2026, JNIM militants attacked an advanced position of the Burkinabe army and volunteer fighters (VDP) in the town of Kantchari (Kantchari, Tapoa, Est), killing 8 people including 7 soldiers and 1 VDP, and injuring three others. JNIM claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it killed 9 soldiers, and seized several machine guns and other equipment. 8 fatalities coded, as the lowest estimate available.
