On February 25, Police shot dead Ranjit Singh (19) in an encounter and arrested Dilawer Singh (21) for the February 23 killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar at Adhian village in Gurdaspur District of Punjab near the Pakistan border area, reports The Tribune. Director Inspector General (DIG) (Border Range) Sandeep Goel said Ranjit escaped after a Police jeep overturned near Gahlri village and later opened fire on a team led by Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Station House Officer (SHO) Gurmeet Singh. He was killed in retaliatory fire, while the SHO sustained injuries. Police claimed the trio, including absconding Inderjit Singh (20), was roped in by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for money. The family demanded an inquiry into the encounter and questioned the SHO’s injury.
