On February 23, the KNLA launched an ambush against a Military Commission column that had entered the Brigade 7 area near Hlaingbwe (Paingkyon) Township, where the KNU headquarters is located, under the guise of territorial expansion. According to a KNU central office statement, two soldiers were killed and eight others were injured during the attack. Additionally, two local civilians were wounded by the military's indiscriminate heavy artillery fire.
