On 17 February 2026, in San Marcos, Atlantida, National Police units including the special operations forces of the Grupo Elite Cobra clashed with the Banda de Wilmer Gang. Officers arrived to execute judicial orders and arrest the gang leader, a fugitive who escaped from El Porvenir prison in December 2025, but were met with heavy gunfire. The exchange of fire lasted several hours in mountainous terrain. Four suspected gang members were killed at the scene. One police officer died from injuries sustained during the clash. Three additional officers were wounded, two seriously; the injured were evacuated and transported to hospitals in La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula. AK-47 rifles were seized. The gang leader fled the scene. 5 fatalities. 3 injured.
