SAA event in Huehuetenango, Huehuetenango area, Guatemala on Tue 17th February 2026

Around 17 February 2026 (as reported), Huehuetenango, Huehuetenango, a prisoner shot and killed a prison guard and abandoned his body in the passenger's seat of a police car in Brisas del Campo (Zone 10). According to the investigators, the guard was escorting the detainee to a clinic, when the latter stole his weapon, attacked him and then escaped. Another version on the attack, claims that the victim's vehicle was intercepted by other armed men who killed him and helped the detainee escape. The current whereabouts of the escaped prisoner are unknown. 1 fatality.
