On 17 February 2026, in San Lorenzo del Pailon (San Lorenzo, Esmeraldas), an unknown number of armed assailants shot and killed an active-duty member of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces in the city center. The victim was struck by a gunshot to the head and was transported to a local health center, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests were made and the motive remains unknown. 1 fatality.
