FLORISSANT, Mo. – Demolition is scheduled to begin Monday in the Cades Cove subdivision after radioactive contamination was discovered in Coldwater Creek, prompting the removal of six homes. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, crews will demolish the homes one at a time, removing all debris and excavating contaminated material down to the soil. For longtime residents like Ann Havens, the news has been unsettling. “It makes us take a breath and say, ‘Am I at risk living in this subdivision?’” Havens said. Havens has lived in Cades Cove for more than a decade. Like many of her neighbors, she recently learned that Coldwater Creek was contaminated with radioactive waste dumped in the 1940s during World War II. Testing revealed radioactive material in the creek and at six properties, leading to the decision to tear the homes down. Havens said her concerns go beyond the demolition itself. “My concern now is, where does this water go?” she asked.
