On 12 February 2026, in El Retiro (Machala, El Oro), unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on an Antinarcotics police patrol along the E-25 highway (Santa Rosa-Machala). The attackers fired multiple shots at the police vehicle as they were attempting to escape (drive-by). Officers returned fire, prompting a pursuit. The suspects abandoned their motorcycle and fled on foot into nearby banana plantations. There were no fatalities.
