On 9 February 2026, in Atacames (Esmeraldas), police fired several shots during an operation to detain an armed suspect. Police responded to an emergency call reporting a man armed with a rifle in Pedro Vicente Maldonado Park. Upon arrival, the suspect confronted officers, prompting them to fire warning shots. The suspect was eventually arrested, and police confirmed that the weapon was not real. Authorities stated that the suspect was already wanted for links to criminal gangs. There were no fatalities.
